Be Happy – Your Proper Body Language Can Do Wonders.

Sometimes unspoken actions that you do can tell a lot about you. Even, if you are doing them consciously or not. During your internship interview, you will have a face-to-face encounter with people who are already professionals in doing what they do best: assessing, criticizing and observing want to be interns like you.

If the situation is set to be like this, then you should now be aware that your body language plays quite an important role during your internship interview. This is because it can give away a lot regarding your personality. It is one way how most employers assess their interviewees. That is why you should be aware of your body language during an interview.

Body language can truly speak louder than words. Different body parts – eyes, hands, arms, legs – can be used in different gestures, with each one having several meanings. Body language is indeed a very powerful method to communicate with other people.

If you develop the art of studying and learning how to read and understand body language appropriately, it may give you three advantages: (1) ability to control the situation, (2) know what others are thinking and intend to say, and lastly, (3) know how to express without the use of words.

Through body language, you can impress other people, detect lying, and even know if somebody is flirting with you. I may place here, what gestures are usually used in certain situation and body gestures and movements that you must avoid. Even without the use of words, you can effectively send your message to another person, and that person to you. The capability to understand body language can help you identify one's moods, emotions, feelings, and desires.

The use of direct eye contact indicates interest, positive thinking, and sincerity. However, it could mean otherwise: mistrust, doubt, and suspicion. Lateral eye movements may mean the person is lying, or inspecting his surroundings making sure no one or everyone is listening. If one would try to recall or imagine something, he would tend to look upward. Looking down may indicate as a submission to an authority, guilt, or domination.

Your hand and arm gestures can also display different meanings. If you talk while facing your palm upwards, you show sincerity. You may detect anger or fury from a person with a clenched fist. And if you encounter somebody who taps or drums his fingers on a surface, he is showing feelings of nervousness or anxiety. Arms crossed across the chest is a display of defense and protection from an outer source, or simply indicate a disagreement.

There are basically two types of body language: positive and negative. Obviously, the positive types are the ones that reflect some good qualities about you. These are also the ones most employers are looking out for to give merit on your profile. However, the negative types are those movements or positions that generally reflects a poor personality.

Be Conscious, Be Positive!

Being conscious and concentrating on positive body movements can be your cutting edge during your interview. So here are some of the positive body languages that you should have when being interviewed.

The best positive body language you have is eye contact. This is vital if you are trying to express confidence and trust. However, you shouldn’t over do it, since it can sometimes construct an uncomfortable ambiance and propose over-familiarity.

Giving a firm and friendly handshake too is one of the easiest observed. When you grip too hard, you can be thought of as arrogant. But if your handshake is too limp, this usually suggests of weakness in your personality.

Another good body language would be keeping your chin up. This can be done literally and metaphorically. Try smiling with open lips along with tilting your head slightly, as to show attentiveness.

Making your palms visible is also another of the positive type. Doing this suggests to your employer your sincerity and openness. Touching your fingertips together can also convey a sense of authority.

How To Be Impressive

You can impress you boss, an interviewer, co-worker, and other people by simply showing that you are confident through your actions, such as handshakes, posture, proper use of eye contact, and hand movements.

  1. When shaking hands, make sure it is firm and your palm will come in contact with the palm of the other person.
  2. Make an eye contact for about two to three seconds and smile slightly.
  3. Maintain a good posture. When standing up, refrain from putting your hands in your pocket or crossing your arms.
  4. When you are sitting down, sit down near the edge with your back tensely straight. This indicates that you are very nervous. Do not slouch as well. Simply relax into the chair without tightening your back muscles.
  5. When conversing, maintain eye contact to make an impression that you are indeed interested and attentive to what the person is saying.
  6. If you are hesitant to prolong eye contact, the trick is to simply look on the bridge of the nose of the person.
  7. You may use hand movements when talking. The person you are talking to will think that you really know what you are talking about.

How You Can Detect Lying

A person lying is easy to determine through his eyes. When he cannot look straight into your eyes or is frequently removing his eyes from you, it means that he is being dishonest and may be hiding something. He would also tend to touch himself unconsciously. He would scratch his forehead, cover the mouth, or rub the nose. These are signs of discomfort due to the situation of lying.

Other signs indicative of lying are sweating, fidgeting, trembling, speech errors, body stiffness, and the like. However, people nowadays are already oriented that they will be caught lying when they cannot prolong eye contact; thus they try to maintain calm and prolong eye contact to cover up their lies.

Is She or He Flirting?

The eyes can always send a signal of attraction. Intense, prolonged eye contact is one flirting signal, as well as the three-step eye contact. When one caught the eye of the other, he looks away, and then back again, it is a sure sign of attraction. Another common flirting signal that both men and women observe is smiling and preening.

Men flirt by showing their masculinity by standing tall and squaring their shoulders. Meanwhile, women love to tease by tossing their hair, licking their lips, and showing some bare skin.

You can show someone that you like him or her, and likewise, you can determine if somebody is attracted to you. The most basic and first sign of attraction is the smile; the wider the smile, the more he or she is into you. But you can also prove one's attraction by the eyes. If you are in opposite corners of a room, you could send a sign of romantic invitation by giving a lingering, soft look.

Giving a quick look and suddenly looking away, and then back to eye contact is a form of flirting and sign of interest. Looking from the eyes down to the lips and back to the eyes again also indicates romance. Other gestures can also be signs of attraction, such as if the person is facing you directly or leaning towards you.

You can also read from another person's actions if he or she is neither attracted nor interested. A hard look or glare could state “back off” louder than mouthing the words. Never taking a peek, looking away, keeping the mouth shut the entire time, turning the body away, shuffling of feet, fiddling with things, staring at people other than you, a neutral or passive expression, unfocused attention, crossing the arms, and moving away are just some of the clues that he or she is not interested to have a romantic encounter with you.

Detect Lies

You do not need to investigate to determine if somebody is being dishonest to you. All you need is knowledge in understanding body language to spot lies. The simplest way to detect lies is to simply look for signs of discomfort, anxiety, and nervousness. Inability to look directly to the eyes, fidgeting with the fingers, shuffling of the feet, sudden crossing of the arms or legs, glancing around the room, and forced smiles are the most common clues of lying.

Be Careful And Observant

To give a proper impression to a lover, boss, co-worker, friend, or even a stranger, you must know how and when to use your own body language. Be careful in making gestures; other people may misinterpret them. And likewise, observe other people's actions as well to know how to correctly react to them.

Acts of Body Language You Must Avoid

These are negative signs that you should start avoiding when interacting with somebody: looking at the watch or clock and fingernails, crossing the arms, putting the hands in the pocket, holding objects in front of you, stroking the chin, squinting, forcing a smile, placing hands on the waist, rubbing the nape, slouching, tapping the foot, and the like.

Body language can truly send signals of emotions and state of mind. One needs only to learn how to understand how one person acts in order to determine what is really going on in the mind of that person. That is the art of learning the secrets behind body language.

If you have to concentrate on your positive body languages, then you should also be aware of certain negative body language that you should avoid during an interview.

  1. You should avoid crossing your arms, since this can convey defensiveness.
  2. Looking down, feet tapping, head resting on your hands, and slouching are four big no-no’s, which all expresses boredom.
  3. Do not let your interviewer see that you are nervous by locking your ankles, playing with your hair, fidgeting or even biting your nails.
  4. You shouldn’t also show arrogance or over confidence during an interview. Being confident is good but going over board is bad. To avoid showing this, you should refrain from walking too erectly and briskly while your hands are clasped behind your head. Remember, you are in a job interview, and not at home where you can act such way.
  5. Putting your hands on your hips and doing angry gestures like placing your fists on the table and pointing can show aggression, which is a really bad thing when applying for a job.
  6. Lastly, avoid rubbing your nose or eyes; doing this can express doubt, which can make your interviewer feel that you are not quite sure if you really want the position or not.

Be Happy – Offer Better Gestures for Better Results.

You can easily read another person through his body language. One's actions definitely have more honesty compared to the words coming out from his mouth. Body language is a form of communication wherein one would use the areas or parts of the body to convey a message. It involves gestures, facial expressions, and other body movements. It is an essential part of communication since words alone is not enough to show one's meaning, ideas, or emotions.

Various body parts are used in the body language – the hands, arms, legs, head, and body posture. Hands can make several gestures, each with a difference in meaning; and you can express well through them. If you want to let another person know you are interested in him or in the conversation, the hands can emphasize it for you. Do not try to hide your hands from him, like putting them into your pockets. This gesture means that you are hiding something from him or you are already getting bored. Showing your palm upward or outward shows that you are comfortable and interested in your situation. Leaning your body or directing it towards that person is also a signal that you are indeed listening to him.

You can still give a good impression even in the most tense situations, like in a job interview. You simply have to avoid gestures that are giving signals that you are nervous, uncomfortable, or anxious. Never slouch, fidget, drum your fingers, shuffle your feet, or tremble. These actions take the word “confidence” away from you.

You can also speak through handshakes. A firm one with the palm pointing downwards and arm slightly extended indicates confidence or power. Meanwhile, a weak handshake pointing upward is an indication of tension or shyness. You must also be aware of the message you are trying to convey whenever you cross your arms. This is one of the actions that you must avoid. This will tell another person that you might be hiding something, lying, or being impatient.

In conversing with another person, it is a great advantage that you know their culture. Prolonged eye contact, act of raising voice volume, and touching may be rude to other countries, especially in Asia. Also, there are a number of gestures that mean differently in other cultures.

You should learn how to speak using your body. Body language is indeed much more convincing than words and is very useful in giving impressions in certain situations. But the only trick in learning how to speak and understand body language is that what books or research say may not necessarily be the intentions or real message of one person.

Consciously or unconsciously, humans can send and receive messages through body language. It is a form of nonverbal communication, which mainly involves gestures using the different parts of the body. It would truly be an advantage if you know how to read and interpret another person's body language for the very reason that you can determine his or her mood, expressions, and desires.

There are several gestures that a person uses in different specific situations – at work, in a job interview, dinner date, or even in a casual conversation. The eyes, arms, and hands are the body parts frequently used to communicate, even unconsciously.

Through Eye Language

Your eyes can clearly express what you feel or desire. Eye contact is the most important eye body language since it could mean interest, confidence, eagerness to listen, and sincerity. The inability to hold long eye contact indicates dishonesty or discomfort.

Eye contact is the most powerful language using the eyes. It have different meanings. It can indicate mistrust from another person when he cannot take his eyes off the speaker, or it may mean that the person has a positive outlook or interest on what the speaker is saying. In instances that a person would look from one eye to another then another area, there are different interpretations as well.

Movement from one eye to another then to the forehead indicates that the person is looking at authoritative figure. Another instance is when the person would look from one eye to the other then to the nose, this means that there are no level of superiority in either party. The last case indicates a sign of romance or attraction when the person would look from one eye to another then down to the lips.

However, the eyes can be misleading, especially if there are other gestures accompanying it. Despite direct eye contact, when the person you are speaking to is still fiddling something with his hands, it means that is mind is elsewhere but you. If he is looking at you but with the arms crossed, it indicates signs of bother or defense from you. Another case is when there is eye contact but the head is slightly tilted. This indicates boredom. Lies can be spotted as well when there is excessive blinking and no eye contact.

The eyes, small as they are, have big meanings and indications behind them. Eye contact is one of the strongest eye language that one can use to say that they are interested, sincere, and attentive. Lack of eye contact and inability to prolong it may mean that the person is lying, hiding something, or is becoming bored or uninterested.

Cliché as it is, the eyes are indeed the windows of the soul. The eye body language is one of the most powerful mediums of nonverbal communication. It can either support or betray whatever you are saying. Even the slightest movement of the eye can indicate the biggest meaning.

During a conversation, it is normal to have eye contact. It means differently in specific situations. Looking at a person directly to the eye means that you are interested in what he is saying. But the inability to take the eyes of another person when he or she is talking may also indicate doubt, suspicion, or lack of trust.

Appropriate use of eye contact also includes when to break eye contact. A long eye contact has many interpretations. It may mean a focused attention or sign of attraction. But this can sometimes be uncomfortable, thus the trick is to just look at the bridge of the nose. Long eye contact may also indicate a sign of authority or domination if one can do it without much blinking. However, prolonged eye contact may also pose as a threat, so breaking it from now and then is essential. But breaking it may indicate other meanings as well, such as situations wherein one wants to end the conversation, has been insulted or found out, or is being threatened.

The eyes looking at different directions also have different meanings. When one looks up to the right, it means that he is imagining visual images. Meanwhile, when he looks up to the left direction, it means that he is trying to recall a memory. However, there are still instances where it is in a reversed order, depending on the person. Try to test him first by asking him to recall a known memory and to picture out an event.

On the other hand, looking down may mean that one is talking to himself, but this is more evident if there is also movement of the lips. It is also a signal of guilt or submission. Looking down on another person means that he is control of the situation or is talking to someone who is under his superiority.

Lateral eye movements can also indicate signs of dishonesty, distraction, or simply checking out the surroundings. When looking from one eye to the other then going up to the forehead, it means that you are looking at somebody with superiority. When going down to the nose, you are talking to someone within the level of your status. And when looking from one eye to the other and down to the lips, it indicates a sign of attraction or romance.

Different emotions and mood can be expressed through gazing, glancing, winking, squinting, closing, and staring. Gazing indicates interest or concentration. Glancing indicates desire. For example, one glances at food. It means that has a desire to eat. Winking indicates an agreement, and it could also be a means of flirtation. A person would squint his eyes if he is uncertain or trying to evaluate or verify truthfulness. Closing the eyes means that the person wants a moment to be away from the world, or simply trying to remember. And lastly, staring indicates a state of shock, surprise or disbelief.

You can use your eyes to show affection to another person. Winking is one way to flirt. The process of looking at someone, quickly looking away, and then staring back is an obvious indication of attraction. A lingering, warm gaze is also an indicator of romance or desire.

If you know how to read and understand the eye body language, you will know what the person you are conversing with would want to tell you. And, if you know how to properly use it, you can take control of any situation or know when is the proper timing to use different eye movements or expressions.

The eyes can also perform vertical and lateral scans or movements. Vertical scan is wherein the person may be checking out the whole appearance of another, from head to toe. This is typical in meeting other people to gain the first impression. The latter, lateral or horizontal scan, may mean looking from one eye to the other or checking out the surroundings.

Looking form one eye to another may mean discomfort and can be straining; thus if you want to make an impression that you are holding eye contact, you may opt looking at the bridge of the nose of the other person. When doing this type of lateral scan then to the forehead, it indicates that you are talking to someone with superiority. When looking from one eye to another then to the nose, you are talking to someone in the same level of status.

You're eyes can also express different feelings or state of mind. The act of winking is a signal of agreement or flirtation. Glancing means a moment of desire for the specific object. When one squints at what you are saying, it means that he is analyzing if you are telling the truth. When one wants to get away from the world even for a moment and think deeply, he would tend to close his eyes. And if the eyes would widen, it is a signal of shock, surprise, or disbelief.

Crossed Arms

Arms crossed across the chest is one of the most powerful and basic gestures used by anyone. One can form a barrier between himself and another person by crossing his arms, or it may simply mean that he feels cold. It can also indicate as a protection or defense in nervous or anxious situations.

When you are talking to someone and he would cross his arms, it means that he opposes, suspects, or doubts what you are saying. But if he is talking with his arms crossed, it means that he may be nervous, lying, or hiding something from you.

The pockets are never the right place to put your hands into. A person with his hands in the pocket may indicate that he is nervous, uncomfortable, bored, or uninterested. This gesture indicates also that he may be hiding something from you or he doesn't want to engage in a specific activity or task.

An open palm means sincerity or honesty. A clenched fist is a very clear indication of frustration, anger, resistance, and defense. But there are times wherein it indicates confidence in one's idea or opinion. Nervousness or anxiousness is seen in someone who is tapping or twitching his fingers. Rubbing of hands, meanwhile, may indicate extreme excitement or cold feeling.

There are many gestures that our complex body could make, and each one have different interpretations. However, there are times when a gesture does not necessarily reflect or show what you intend to say or feel inside.

Handshakes have many meanings and is used in different situations. It is used when greeting others, meeting new people, or closing a deal or agreement. You can use handshakes to make good impressions. You can show that you are confident by giving firm handshakes, with your hand pointing downwards and your arm extended. On the other hand, a weak handshake with the hand pointing upwards would indicate that you are shy, uncomfortable or nervous.

Crossing the arms would mean differently depending on who is talking. If you are the one talking and the other person crosses his arms, it means he does not believe you or was insulted by something you said and uses it as a barrier of defense. Meanwhile, if he is talking with his arms crossed, it may mean that he is hiding something from you or simply feels cold.

Other Gestures And Movements in Body Language

Nervousness, anxiety, and lack of confidence can be shown when you put your hands in your pocket, slouch, fidget, drum your fingers on the table, rock or shuffle your feet, and the like. Thus if you want to give a good impression, try to avoid these gestures; although most of the times they are subconscious actions.

Understanding and knowing how to read body language of other people can give you the ability of interpreting another person's thoughts, and you will be able know how to react appropriately.

Be Happy – With Proper Body Language You Can Succeed During A Job Interview.

A job interview is very essential for both the employer and applicant for the very reason that it will be the basis of rejecting or accepting the applicant for the vacant job. Thus, as an applicant, it is relevant that he or she must be fully prepared for the job interview. You must remember that your employer or interviewer does not only consider the way you dress, your credentials, or even your answers to his questions. Your body language is also being well-observed.

Your body language can tell another person what kind of person you are, your emotions, and state of mind. An employer would be looking for a confident and competent employee. Thus, you should know and learn the posture to maintain, movements to impress, and gestures to avoid during the interview.

Postures You Must Maintain

Never slouch! Either in sitting or standing, slouching would give the impression of laziness or lack of confidence. Do not sit at the edge of the chair, this would mean that you are too nervous or tense. Simply relax into your chair, and place your hands on your lap. Crossing the legs is not really advisable, but nonetheless it is fine, as long as the direction of your body is towards the interviewer.

Movements To Impress

You can show your interest and confidence through handshakes, and you can give a good first impression as well. However, there are times wherein initiating the handshake would make you appear overconfident. When you shake hands, make sure you make eye contact, but not longer than three seconds. Your palm should be able to touch the palm of your interviewer. Extend your arm and point your hand downwards.

Eye contact is important in a job interview. This shows that you are honest, sincere, and confident. The lack of eye contact may mean that you are lying or being uncomfortable.

When responding, make use of your hands. Showing your palm when explaining something indicates that you are being relaxed, honest, and confident. The interviewer will think that you know what you are talking about. If you want to emphasize something, you can do it with a clenched fist; but this is not an advisable gesture during an interview.

You can show interest and that you are listening attentively to your interviewer through head movements. Nodding is a reinforcement that you understood or agreed to what he or she said. Even though there are ideas that you would like to oppose to, nodding is still preferable rather than arguing. The latter might be the reason why you cannot get the job.

Gestures You Must Avoid

Avoid putting your hands into your pockets. This can emphasize your nervousness, or can give your interviewer that you may be hiding something from him, or you are uninterested to get the job. You can use hand movements when talking, however do not use them frequently. Excess movements can distract your interviewer from listening to your responses.

Another gesture you must avoid is frequent eye movement. Avoiding the interviewer's eyes will make him think that you are not listening or getting bored and uninterested. This may also give the impression that you are the type of person who is easily distracted, a weakness that could make you unqualified for the job.

Better Safe Than Sorry

Body language does not necessarily show what you intend to convey or really feel. But it is an advantage that you know the gestures you must use or avoid during a job interview to give a good impression for the words that you long to hear: “Congratulations. You are hired!”

Read People By Their Body Language

The art of body language is that you can read other people by determining their feelings, emotions, and subconscious state of mind. Each body gesture and movement have a particular meaning depending on the event, place, and the people involved. Therefore, even without words spoken, the body can thoroughly deliver a message to another person.

Look Into Their Eyes

The eyes can truly speak volumes. When you are lying, your eyes can betray you by sending a signal of dishonesty. The eyes will reflect one's honesty and sincerity if there is maintenance of eye contact. You can tell if someone is lying through the eyes if he cannot keep his eye on you and his blinking rate is increasing.

You can also tell if the person you are talking to is interested in what you are saying or not. When he maintains eye contact with you, it means that he has his focus of attention to your conversation. But, sometimes the case is different. Some people has practiced eye contact, but deep inside they lack interest. Dull and passive eyes also indicates boredom.

Romance and flirtation can also be delivered through the eyes. When somebody would catch your eye, he would look away. But if he looks back at you, it may mean that he is into you. If he doesn't look back, it means he found no chemistry from you.

Watch Their Hand Movements

One common hand gesture is the crossing of the arms over the chest. This may signify one's anger, doubt or suspicion, or defensiveness from a verbal attack from another person. It is also one of the signs of lying and arrogance.

Another hand gesture is the hands-in-the-pocket gesture. This may have different interpretations. The person may lack confidence or interest, or simply refusing to do a task given to him. Another meaning if this gesture is that he may be nervous or anxious in the current situation. He may also be hiding something from you.

Observe Their Posture

When a person slouches while sitting down or standing up, it may indicate laziness. But this is not necessarily true, since he may have gotten used to that posture, but is not indeed lazy.

However, the most preferred posture is where one would keep his back straight with chin slightly up. This posture must be done without excessive tightening of the back muscles; otherwise he would look definitely stiff and awkward.

Obvious Signs Of Emotions

You can detect if a person is nervous if he finds it impossible to stay still. His body gestures would include fidgeting, tapping the hand or foot, drumming his fingers, pacing around the room back and forth, and trembling. Meanwhile frustration can be signified by a clenched fist, arms crossed over the chest, and the hands on the waist.

Confidence and comfort is reflected from one's good posture, maintenance of eye contact, relaxed use of hand gestures and body movements. The opposite of these gestures means otherwise – lack of confidence.

These signals from one's body language does not necessarily reflect what the person truly feels inside. His gestures may have been his mannerisms or simply actions that he has gotten used to. Thus, it is relevant as well not to be very judgmental in interpreting one's body language.

Be Happy – You Must Have Proper Body Language With Your Friend.

When interacting with somebody you are acquainted with, you must learn how to make a good impression. Your body language would speak much louder compared to the words you are saying. It is essential to be careful of one's actions towards another, since this may either strengthen the bond or ruin it due to offensive, rude manners and gestures.

Personal Space

Everyone of us has his own personal space. We must respect each one's personal space, otherwise it is an invasion of privacy. A person usually has a large personal space when around a person she does not know, but it will get smaller once he will get to know that person.

Greet With A Handshake

A handshake is always a nice way of greeting, whether in formal or casual circumstances. Show confidence and interest in the one you are greeting with a firm handshake. In shaking hands, it is important to make an eye contact and accompany it with a slight sincere smile. Make sure your hand is pointing downwards, since pointing the hand upward may indicate awkwardness and hesitation. See to it also that your palm will come in contact with the palm of the other person.

A handshake is also a safe method of greeting somebody. Some countries find other forms of greeting awkward and unacceptable, such as kissing and hugging.

Gestures To Avoid

You must avoid gestures that might offend the other party. Avoid rude hand and arms gestures such as placing your hands into the pocket or on the waist, crossing the arms across your chest, drumming your fingers, tapping your hand or foot, fidgeting with objects, inspecting your fingernails, and propping your chin onto your hands.

Also avoid turning or leaning your body away from the person. It shows that you are very eager to get out of the situation you are in. Watch your posture as well. Avoid slouching or a sluggish posture. It is interpreted as lack of interest or boredom.

As much as possible, you should not break the eye contact and look at other objects or people. This is a sign indicating that you are distracted or your attention is already somewhere else.

Show Interest

You should show the other person that you are interested in your interaction or conversation by showing signs that you are a good listener. Maintain eye contact to show that your focus of attention is on that person and in your conversation. Lean towards him and nod your head from time to time.

Be Sensitive To His Body Language Too

In interacting with another person, you should observe his or her actions as well. He may be oblivious to his body movements, but he may be telling you that it is time to end the conversation. These are the kinds of people who find it rude to be the first one to end the conversation. Thus be sensitive when you are with other people; they might already be bored or annoyed.

Culture: An Important Factor

You should consider also the culture of the person you are conversing with. There are countries with a very conservative culture, especially those in Asia. They may be very sensitive to the gestures you perform. Even if you do not intend showing rudeness to other people, you still have to be cautious of your actions.

Be Happy – Your Perfect Body Language Can Influence Other’s Decisions.

Communication will never be effective without body language. Words only make out 7% of the communication process and speech particulars (voice, intonation, pacing) make out 38%. The rest of the 55% comes from the body gestures, movements, and facial expressions.

The first signs of attraction that a person usually sends to another comes from the body, not the mouth. Actions do indeed speak louder than words. Body language is significant in attraction because most of us are hesitant in telling our inner feelings. So why not let our bodies speak for us?

Common Signs Of Attraction

One can show his or her attraction to another person through eye contact. A brief eye contact may not mean anything, but if it would last longer than it should, it may be a definitive sign of attraction. Note if he would look back as well. Even though your eye met for a few seconds but if he would not look back again, it means he may not be attracted to you.

Simple gestures of smiling and closing the distance between both of you are strong signals of attraction as well. That person would tend too lean forward or the direction of his or her body would be towards you. Touching from time to time is also a way of showing this feeling; sometimes he or she would accidentally brush against you just to have that physical contact.

The Most Attractive Body Language

A confident body language could always attract anybody from any gender. It is rare for somebody who prefers a person with a poor posture and mishandled gestures; these signify low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence.

Show confidence by giving a firm handshake, maintaining a good posture and proper use of gestures. These reflect a high self-image. Develop this practice of body language, and you will be successful in meeting new people.

Difference of Men And Women

Men and women definitely have different ways of showing each other how they feel. Women usually show more obvious signs. They would try to make themselves look more attractive by adjusting their clothes, smoothening the skirt, and the like. They would twirl or play with their hair, cross and uncross their legs, and rock their leg back and forth with the sandal hanging on the toes. These are playful gestures but they are effective signals of attraction.

On the other hand, men would show their prowess by showing off their masculinity through their “macho” posture. This posture is done by standing taller and squaring the shoulders back. Some men would hook their thumbs into their belt to emphasize their masculinity more. Unconscious gestures done by men when interacting with the person they are attracted to include touching the tie and raising the eyebrows.

It Could Be A Waste Of Time

After giving hints that you are into this person, how would you know if he or she is not attracted to you? A person, consciously or unconsciously, could give signs saying, “No. I really am not interested.” If a person can't tell you directly through words, then look for signs from his or her body language.

Lack of eye contact, forced or fake smiles, frequent sighing, looking around except at you, and the like – if you are given these signals of annoyance or lack of interest, then consider it as a waste of time.

Know How To Speak Through Body Language

Body language is a form of nonverbal communication wherein one can send or receive messages through body movements, gestures, facial expression, and the like. There are general acts of body language that almost everyone does in his or her daily life. However, do you know how to speak this language? Can you understand other people by just reading their body language? The importance of knowing how to speak through body language is that you can have the ability to control any situation with anybody in any place and time.

Personal Space

Everyone of us has his own personal space. It is somewhat like a comfort zone. It is an invisible region that surrounds you, and if someone tries to invade it, you will feel uncomfortable or threatened. But one's personal space is dependent on certain situations. A person who grew up in the city with crowded streets has a smaller personal space compared to one who lives in the rural area. Learning how to respect one's personal space is one method to make communication through body language more effective between two or more people. There are body movements and gestures better appreciated and understood when there is an appropriate distance.

Communication In Body Language

Communication is the method of exchanging messages between two or more people. But words are not the only effective means of talking to another person. The use of body language is a type of nonverbal communication wherein one would use his body to express. This includes the gestures, posture, facial expression, and eye contact. The fact is that all of us are unaware most of the time that we are already sending signals and conveying messages.

Let Your Eyes Speak

The eyes are truly the windows of the soul. It can speak louder than any body movements, even words. The power that the eyes have is that they are truly expressive; no matter what we say, the eyes will prove one's sincerity or honesty.

The eye contact is a very strong reinforcement of your current situation. When the other person is talking and you are maintaining eye contact, it signifies that you are listening to her and you are interested in the conversation. When you are the one talking, eye contact indicates that you are being honest and sincere about what you are saying.

Your eyes can also show that you are undergoing boredom, anxiety, distraction, and lack of interest. Boredom and lack of interest is reflected when the eyes are dull or would break the eye contact and wander around the room. Distraction is also indicated by the sudden break of eye contact and the eyes will be directed to the source of distraction. Meanwhile, anxiety or tension is evident when there is an increase in one's blinking rate.

How You Can Impress Or Convince

It is simple to give a good impression by using body language. A good posture when sitting or standing is essential. Always remember not to slouch. Some people usually regard it as laziness or boredom. When sitting down, do not sit at the edge of the chair. This would make your back look stiffer thus making you look nervous. As much as possible, do not cross you legs as well. If you do so, make sure the direction of your body is towards the other person. When standing, avoid putting your hands in your pocket or crossing your arms over the chest.

You can also impress by giving a firm handshake with eye contact and a slight smile. This action will reflect that you are confident and comfortable. Hand gestures while talking is also a positive body language; it signifies that you know what you are talking about. But avoid too much hand gestures since it might distract the other person from focusing on what you are saying.

Give Signals Of Interest And Attraction

As stated above, long eye contact is one of the strongest signal of interest. Breaking eye contact and then going back again is a sign of interest being exchanged by two people who do not know each other yet. It is an act of eye body language used in flirting.

Other signs that you may use to show your interest includes leaning or directing the body towards the other person and nodding the head, which means “I agree” or “Go on, continue”.

Communicate In A Foreign Body Language

When you are visiting a foreign country or communicating with a foreigner, it is essential that you have a background on their culture and acceptable body language. Prolonged eye contact may be a sign of interest generally, but some Asian countries find it as intimidating and rude. Thus, learn how to communicate through body language appropriately to gain respect and good impression from other people.

Don’t use flirting body language.

The flirting body language is complicated to understand and oftentimes misinterpreted. Men gives signs of flirtation in different ways compared to women. So how can you tell if someone is already flirting with you? Does she like me? Is he interested in me? This article discusses facts and tips on determining flirting signals.

Men's Flirting Signals

There are five standard body signals that a man is flirting:

1. Eye Contact

A man would give you is catching your eye. But if he passes on to another person and doesn't look back at you, it means that he is not interested. However, if he glimpses at you, looks away, and then back at you again, it is a very clear indication that he is attracted to you. Sometimes, eye contact would not mean anything. But if it lasts longer, it means something indeed is running in his mind and you are involved.

2. Raising the Eyebrows

It is not a very strong indication and is most of the time done unconsciously. It often means that he finds you interesting or sexy.

3. Giving the Masculine Impression,

Men would square his shoulders and try to stand tall and straight. When sitting, his feet and legs will be apart. A man would also tend to hook his thumbs over his belt. These actions would show and emphasize his masculinity, with hopes that he would acquire that admiration from you.

Women's Flirting Signals

Research shows that woman gives body language messages five to six times more than men. She can give many signs that she is flirting with you and they are easy to spot. The most common action is preening. A woman would tend to play, stroke or comb her hair and sometimes toss it over her shoulder. A strong flirting preening action is when a woman would involve her lips. Licking the lips, eating slowly, drinking with poise while having eye contact, and putting on lipstick can easily seduce a man.

Slowly crossing or stroking the legs is also a clear intentional flirting action by women. She would also tend too adjust her clothes to expose more skin. Playing with an object, like a glass, is a sign that she likes you. But make sure she is looking at you while doing it, otherwise it would mean that she is not interested.

“Yes, I like You”

The general signs saying that he or she is indeed interested with you include smiling, longer eye contact, preening, licking the lips, raising the eyebrows, playing with the hair, looking away and then back again, leaning towards you, head slightly tilted, mirroring your actions, good posture, frequent nodding, laughing, and many more. If you spot these signs, then it would be a great time to move a step further.

“No, I'm Really Not Interested”

How would you know if that quick glance did not mean anything and a connection is not happening? Watch out for these body language signals: looking away and not looking back, looking at other people, slouching, sighing loudly, passive expression, playing an object with her fingers without looking at you while you talk, dull eyes, crossing the arms, and the like.

Body language is truly a strong reinforcement of messages especially during flirting, seduction, and dating. Each one may have different ways to express their desires, but most of these actions have general meanings that are easy to decipher and learn

Be Happy – You Can Understand the Wrongs Through Body Acts.

A person may cover up lies through confident facial expressions and voice pitch and volume, however their body can reveal dishonesty. Fidgeting, shakiness, trembling of the hands, body stiffness, shuffling of the feet, and jitters are typical indicators of lying, but they are not that definitive or reliable. Gestures showing the palm indicate sincerity. But in lying, the palms are rarely seen and are usually inside their pockets. As a defensive posture and protection, one would tend to cross his arms across his chest. Liars are also prone to sweating, increasing heart rate, breathing deeper, and being pale.

How To Spot Lies In Body Language

There are several more indicators of lying. However, they are less reliable in detection of dishonesty. Among them are forced smiles, slight tightening of the forehead between the eyebrows, lip biting, hand shrugs, movement of the Adam's apple, delay of answers or response, flaring of nostrils, tighter lips, elbows pulled to the sides, tilting head movements, inability to concentrate on other things, and other unnatural gestures.

This is the art of understanding body language. Even though sometimes unreliable, several different gestures can tell you how sincere and honest a person is to you. Simply look for the typical signs of lying and detect dishonesty instantly.

It is possible that you can detect lies even by merely looking at the body language. There are many signs delivered by the body, head to toe, wherein you could determine the person is lying. Catch your husband cheating, your friend hiding a secret from you, or a person being dishonest by knowing the signals of lying and dishonesty.

The Typical Signs of Lying

The signs that obviously show that a person is lying are sings of nervousness, tension, and anxiousness. You could observe these emotions by the way his eyes are moving, how he moves around, and how he reacts to your verbal attacks.

Eyes: The Clearest Indicator

The eyes are very strong indicators of every emotion, including dishonesty. When the person cannot look straight at you or he is unable to prolong the eye contact, there is a big possibility that he is lying. Notice also the rate of his blinking. Do not literally count how many times he blinks, you can easily spot it. Frequent movements of the eyes, like looking at other objects other that you, and pupil dilatation are also indicators of lying.

Observe the Hands

Some people have practiced prolonging eye contact when lying, so the next best sign you should be observing are the hand gestures. A person lying would usually have trembling hands during anxious moments. He also would tend to show excessive use of hand gestures while talking. When defensive from a verbal attack or when hiding something, the person would usually put his hands into his pockets or cross his arms over his chest. He will also tend to fidget with something with his hands or tap them.

Note How He Speaks

Observing a person's way of delivering his speech is somewhat tricky. You may have to know first how he normally speaks before judging his sincerity or honesty. But if you already know the speech habits of the person, then it would be less difficult to detect lying. The volume of the voice would be softer than usual, but during a defensive state of mind, he would usually raise his voice. Then there would be some speech errors, such as mispronunciation, stuttering, or stammering. The pacing of the way he talks would also be faster.

Other Signs Of Lying

Another sign of lying is when the person would tend to touch himself when he delivers his lies. Self touching gestures include rubbing the nose, scratching the forehead, and touching the nape, elbow, or other parts of the body. Self touching is a strong indication of discomfort and guilt.

Observe also the rest of the body. Note if the person is trembling, fidgeting, or shaking. But these actions are usually found during extreme nervousness. A stiff posture with the elbows pulled to the sides and tightened muscles is a posture which reflects lying as well.

The meanings and interpretations of the different acts and signals of body posture are not always true and definitive. This is one of the risks in reading other people's body language. You may be too quick to judge their honesty and even their whole personality. Thus, be careful in interpreting other's gestures and body movements.

The last thing you would want to happen is a conflict due to miscommunication and misinterpretation.

Expressions Through Body Language

Most of the time, words are not enough to express how someone really feels. And sometimes, what we say are not really what we intend to convey. This is where nonverbal communication gains its importance in the interaction of two or more people.

Body language, a form of nonverbal communication, is the conscious and unconscious use of gestures and body movements to send messages, moods, feelings, and state of mind. You can easily identify one's emotions if you know how to read and interpret his or her actions.

Anger

This emotion is probably the easiest to identify from one person. Aside from the increasing of the voice volume, facial movements could identify anger or fury. It could be identified by one hard, intense look on the source of his anger or when the eyebrows would meet at the center slightly above the bridge of the nose. Other facial body language involved in this emotion include nasal flaring, teeth baring, snarling, flushing of the face, shallow breathing, and tightening of the lips and jaw.

A person with a clenched fist, perspiration, his hands on the waist, or arms crossed across the chest are signs of anger as well.

Nervousness, Tension, And Anxiety

The most common signs of these emotions are dry mouth, pale face, trembling of the lips and fingers, and perspiration. A nervous or anxious person would tend to move a lot to remove the tension off his body, thus he would fidget, rock or tap his feet, drum his fingers on a surface, or pace around the room back and forth. Lack of eye contact or the inability to hold prolonged eye contact is also an indication of these emotions.

Fear and Defensive State

Trembling, perspiration, and a pale face could also be seen in fear. The skin will be cold and clammy, the voice will tremble, muscle tension, and the body will have a defensive posture when threatened. A defensive posture includes the raising of the hands, crossing of arms or regressing to the fetal position. The person will also try to make a distance from the source of his fear or danger.

Flirting And Attraction

Flirting body language is quite complicated since women and men have different ways of showing it. But the signs that the two genders have in common in showing attraction include prolonged eye contact, smiling, raising of eyebrows, preening, adjusting or touching of clothes, looking at the lips of the other person, leaning towards the person, and closing the distance.

Interest And Focus Of Attention

Eye contact is the most indicative sign of interest and attention. Leaning forward to the person and nodding are reinforcements that you are indeed listening to him or her. When the eye would wander to another object, it means that the person may be bored or his attention was distracted.

Confidence

Confidence is evident in a firm handshake, good posture, calm muscles, and comfortable use of hand gestures when conversing. When sitting down, a relaxed position is indicative of confidence as well. Sitting on the edge of the chair with tense back muscle would mean otherwise – tension or nervousness.

Body language has a way of telling us how a person really feels, but the meanings and indications are not reliable and true at all times. Basically, the gestures stated above are the general body movements commonly used by most people in the same situations and emotions.

Be Happy – Use Body Language Prudently.

There is an appropriate timing and place for every act of body language. Most of the time, we are oblivious to the messages we convey through our body gestures and movements. We could give negative signals that might offend other people without intending to do so. There are gestures that we indeed have to avoid, but it may require discipline and practice for the very reason that we may have been used to performing this negative acts in our daily lives.

It is very important for one to be observant of his body language, and those of other people as well. You can read other people by learning how to understand how they act and move. But you must also be aware that there are people who know how to interpret body language, and somebody may already be reading you now. Thus, be cautious of actions by knowing when to use them and what to avoid.

At Work

It is always relevant to be in your best self at work. By doing so, you can impress your boss and please clients. Simply be confident when facing somebody. If you are relaxed, other people would not regard you as overconfident. Show them you truly know what you are talking about by maintaining good posture, eye contact and using appropriate hand gestures.

During A Date

How can you give signs that you are indeed attracted to another person without telling them verbally how you really feel? The solution is simple. Talk with your eyes and match it with a bright smile. These two are enough to let somebody know you are indeed enjoying his or her company.

You would know that the date is going well when signals of flirtation are present. A woman would tend to touch her hair, lick her lips, eat or drink slowly, and preen. Meanwhile, a man would usually wink, close the distance between them, lean forward, and stand tall. Bottom line is both sexes want to impress their partner by showing the masculinity or sexiness through actions. And these signs are indeed just the beginning of a higher level in the relationship.

Acts You Must Practice To Avoid

There are many kinds of gestures that you must practice to avoid. At work, try to hide your anxiety or tension by avoiding fidgeting, trembling, or shaking. Avoid excessive hand movements when talking, since this could distract others from focusing on your statements. Avoid also excessive blinking; this shows you are are uneasy and nervous. Stop looking at your watch or the clock. This is very rude since you are giving an impression that you want to end the interaction right away. Do not stroke you chin, lean on an elbow, and fake a smile.

When on a date, it would be much more polite if you directly say “no” rather than showing signals of rudeness to the person if you are uninterested or getting bored. Do not sigh, look at other people other than your partner, slouch, and prop your head on your hands.

Observe Cultural Differences

The appropriate use of body language also depend on where you are and who you are interacting with. You may be talking to somebody with a very conservative culture and regards some gestures rude and disrespectful, even if they are normally used in your place.

Detecting Lies In Body Language

All of us have experienced lying, and many of us may even think they are already good at it. But how would you know if your partner, friend, sibling, lover, co-staff, acquaintance, or even a stranger is lying to you? What are the different clues to detect lying? The solution is simple: read and interpret his or her body language.

Signs To Look For

The most common signs of lying that you should look for are signs of nervousness, stress, anxiety, tension, defense, and discomfort. These will be evidenced by different gestures, facial expressions, actions, or mannerisms. And among them are self-touching, speech errors, speech hesitations, different eye movements, discrepancies in the body and posture, and many more.

Touching Self

Self touches are also known as adaptors. Liars would tend to touch or rub their nose, scratch their forehead, play with the hair, wring or twist their fingers, cover the mouth, and the like. The urge of frequent self touching indicates extreme nervousness and increasing tension. However, there are some people that have already trained themselves to avoid using these adaptors. Thus, detecting other clues is relevant.

Speech Errors And Hesitations

People who lie, especially those caught in the act, stumble over their speech, stutter, or even mispronounce. Voice pitch will somehow ascend and pacing is faster. However, clues in the speech is tricky. A person may already have speech defects at birth or it may be normal for that person to speak in a fast pace. These are only helpful if you are already familiar with how the person speaks.

Eye Movements

The eyes are the loudest channel of honesty and lies. Eye movements that may indicate lying include lateral movement, squinting, frequent blinking, and looking away. Pupil dilation also occurs during a state of tension, but this is not easy to observe. For ages, it was believed that the inability to hold one's gaze for a long time indicates lying. However, many people are already aware of this and practice over time how to lie even with eye contact.
